Driving healthcare quality one NCQA accreditation at a time

2025 #2
March 26, 2025

From Susan

Spring has sprung, and the MHR team has been brimming with consultations, training, webinars, and updating our templates and tools! I was fortunate to spend a few months escaping the cold and snow in the north and traveling south for some warmth and sunshine. Having a change of scenery is the perfect time for me to evaluate how our products and services serve our customers. In the next few weeks, I will speak with clients to get their input on our quality and efficiency and on new ways we can support their work with comprehensive training programs and staff augmentation. If you would like to offer feedback, please reach out to me.

MHR Propels You Over the Finish Line

How often have you experienced problematic situations like these? Procedures you put in place are not being followed. Reports are late. Analyses are incomplete. Committee members are unprepared for the agenda. Communication between delegates and the organization and timely annual oversight is lacking. Mock file audits have failed because the latest change in standards was not implemented. You likely have other examples. Situations like these are exacerbated when team members are overburdened, often shouldering additional responsibilities in the run-up to NCQA surveys.

A recent client shared their experience with MHR, noting that each MHR consultant who collaborated with their organization brought distinct insights and perspectives, playing a vital role in ensuring they were fully prepared for their upcoming survey. Isn’t this the kind of support you’re seeking? Tailored advice that addresses your unique circumstances instead of a one-size-fits-all approach with the coaching and mentoring provided by our seasoned staff of consultants.

When having either a Discovery Call with potential clients or the SOW call when prospective clients have decided to contract with MHR, we will sometimes hear they believe that they do not need to have an initial file review as “we passed our last survey with no issues” or “we’ve got it under control.” Later when they have changed their minds after hearing so much wisdom and experience from the consultants and decide to have a mock file review, they find out that there are issues, some of which could put them into a corrective action plan (CAP) if the file review was conducted by NCQA at that time. With the time to implement training to mitigate gaps and find sustained improvement, they’ve waited too long and sometimes end up on a CAP. This saddens us, as it is so preventable when engaging with MHR early enough (over 12 months prior to the survey submission).

Standards change, and NCQA expectations and applications change. We are known to be tough consultants, holding our clients to the intent of what NCQA specifies. No client is assessed at a higher bar than we provide, and when surveyors hold you to that specified bar, if you have not listened to us, you will not be happy with the results. These are hard life lessons that affect the organization. If budget is an issue, talk with your consultant about the best value for your consulting dollars. File review is ALWAYS a good investment.

In the complex world of healthcare, organizations often grapple with significant inefficiencies that hinder their ability to meet the stringent requirements of NCQA Accreditation. Why risk the possibility of noncompliance and the potential fallout from unsuccessful audits? While employees may diligently strive to uphold standards, they may lack a comprehensive understanding of the accreditation requirements.  Looking for a solution? Have a thorough assessment of where you stand in your accreditation journey, followed by a customized strategy to help streamline your operations while alleviating the pressures of inefficiencies. That’s what the experts at MHR do.

More Analysis Coming with Proposed 2026 Standards

Significant changes may be coming to the 2026 standards. On the March 13th complimentary webinar, MHR Consultants—Sonia Frazier, Kim Carpenter Petit, and Erin Kafieh—discussed some of the proposed changes and encouraged attendees to consider how these changes might impact their organizations, particularly with new data tracking and reporting requirements. The recorded presentation is now available on our Events page for those who missed it.
