URAC accreditation is more than a checkbox—it’s a strategic investment in quality, compliance, and operational excellence. But make no mistake: it’s a heavy lift that requires time, planning, and internal alignment.
If you're considering accreditation, the best place to start is with a readiness check.
Ask yourself (and your team) these key questions:
1. Have You Read the URAC Standards?
Each URAC program has specific documentation and standards. Reviewing them early helps you spot internal gaps—and avoid delays or rework down the line. Note that prior to your application you can access URAC’s Standards At a Glance. However, the full standards are only available for purchase after you apply for accreditation.
2. Who’s Owning the Process?
Accreditation needs a dedicated leader or team with the authority and time to coordinate efforts, manage timelines, and engage stakeholders. Without clear ownership, progress stalls fast.
3. Is Your Budget Realistic?
The application fee is just the beginning.
Budget for:
- Staff time
- Documentation and system updates
- Consulting or external support
Underestimating cost is one of the most common missteps.
4. Do You Know the Timeline?
Accreditation prep takes time—sometimes more than expected.
Plan for:
- Policy and procedure updates
- Training
- Internal alignment
- Readiness activities
Start early, and don’t rush it.
5. Are Key Dates Mapped Out?
Missing a URAC deadline can derail your entire effort. Track submission windows, review cycles, and payment due dates from the start.
6. Have Legal and Compliance Weighed In?
Some states or contracts require URAC accreditation—or specific wording in documentation. Make sure legal and compliance have reviewed all relevant standards and jurisdictions.
7. Is Your Quality Program Strong?
URAC expects a robust, data-driven quality program.
That includes:
- Measurable goals
- Governance or oversight
- Continuous improvement practices
8. Can You Show Clinical Oversight?
If you're applying for Utilization Management accreditation, your clinical review process must be:
- Evidence-based
- Reviewed by qualified clinicians
- Clearly documented and up to date
The most successful organizations don’t wing it—they assess their readiness first. Align leadership, systems, and resources before starting your application. Not only will that improve your odds—it will also help you get more out of the process.
